The Lawn Tennis Championships Wimbledon 2009
For over 50 years Alexandra Rose Charities have been the only charity to hold a collection and sell roses at the Championships.
Girls from Wimbledon High School eagerly look forward to their chance to raise money for the charity and even sneak a glance at the day’s play.
This year they have an exciting photo opportunity with Chris Eaton who is currently playing doubles at the championships. He is joined by Sangeetha Balasingam and Minty Osmond of Wimbledon High School.
Alexandra Rose Charities helps those small charities with neither voice nor funds to raise money to support those in need in England and Wales. Alexandra Rose works with charities and community organisations across the country. More than 250 people caring groups benefit from Alexandra Rose Charities’ national profile, expertise and organisational support.
Queen Alexandra, the widow of Edward VII, started Alexandra Rose Charities in 1912. Queen Alexandra was of Danish decent and on a visit to Denmark was inspired by a parish priest who cared for homeless and hungry children with money raised by selling the roses in his garden. When the Queen returned home she declared that each year a summer’s day would be set aside to raise money for a wide range of charities, each person who gave money would be given a rose. Alexandra Rose has now moved with the times, in addition to the well-loved Rose Days, fundraising activities go on all year round. This is to ensure funds to provide grants for charities in need.
